Blackberry phone help please...

I wonder if any of the clued up techies help me out.
I have bought a blackberry torch 9860 for Annette to use.She has a pay as you go sim but can't send text messages.The phone will receive them ok.Somebody has mentioned that you need to pay a monthly subscription,but i though that was for the blackberry messaging?
We are able to compose a message and add a recipient but cannot find an icon or link to send.Help please!!

my daughter informs me you press the "blackberry symbol" on the front to send texts or the bottom right button ( L shape backwards ) if that helps. if not you have no text credit
