I am looking to purchase my first dslr.

Could anyone tell me if there is much difference between the canon EOS 550d and the EOS 600d as they are a similar price.

I am a total novice at photography so not sure what to buy

Go for the best price, both are exhalent cameras and put the saved money to good optics

I'm with Miles on this one. All DSLR's are very good at what they do now.
Quality lenses will always help make pictures sharper & clearer.

But even shots you are not happy with, can be improved in one of the many photo editing programs that are available now.
Depending on what type of pictures you are taking also look at filters.
Graduated ones helps with outdoor shots, polarisers with sunny days etc..

Bought a 550 for my daughter, very nice camera, kit lens not super.
Don't personally see any advantage in the 600 but I have had an slr for over 30 years.
Low light is the modern slr advantage,
Bought Canon as all my kit is Canon.

VERY generally Nikon have better starter cameras and are catching up on all models rapidly.

Just bought a 550D after doing a lot of research on these. The 600D has a tilting screen and that's about all that's different.
Been playing today with the different lenses. (Standard supply 18-55 lens & Tamron 70-300 add on lens)
Declared chuffed.
