Was all ready to snipe an auction tonight, not ebay but a local salvage company that had a Mk2 for sale.
Auction ends at 21:18.... so with my best bidding finger I'm ready to enter my best bid in the dying seconds of the auction.

Now you have to be registered with said company with card details & photo ID required just to open an account so you can bid.
So should you have second thoughts after bidding they can still relieve you of your funds.

Anyway back to the auction, It's well into the dying seconds & click my bids in, I'm the high bidder & I'm £250 off my highest bid, bonus, but hang on what's this......

Under the time left which is now under 10 seconds appears some red writing auction extended for 2 minutes & 30 seconds In the dying seconds someone sticks in a counter bid as it shows proxy next to my bid, letting others know I have bid more than the amount shown. All is good though I'm still the high bidder, guess what .... the auction extends for another two times until I get outbid & no-one else sticks in a bid in the dying seconds.

At the actual end time of the auction I would have won the Item for £2500
by the time the auction ended at 21:28 a full ten minutes after it should have ended the bid was £2775 outbidding my max of £2750 by £25. I'm pretty sure if I'd stuck in another bid it would have extended the auction again.
Not a bad way to get the maximum out of your stock. fcuknig wnarkes

I bet the site sets its own "private reserve" and if the reserve is not met then the auction is extended until such time as the reserve is met

this happened to me the other week on the DVLA p/plate auction site but on there it extends it for another 30 mins everytime somebody bids in the last 30 mins it cost me a few quid i phoned up and complained and got bogged off and told to read the small print and yip it was there

Still feel it's one big con. The auction end time was stated on the auction & in the listing in which all the other vehicles appear.

It did not state auction end time 21:18 TBC or until we are happy with the amount bid.
It leaves a bitter taste to say the least......

should use it on ebay as this stops everyone from sticking a bid in ,in the last few seconds

put in your highest bid and leave it , simple , if you win you win

the thing i hate about ebay is everything goes from 20p to £2,000 in the last few seconds , this is a way to try and stop this

I dont see the problem if you play fair and just simply put in your best bid

Paul I have bid on many auctions in quite a few different formats be it online or in person, so I'm not likely to get auction fever anytime soon & bid more than I think something is worth.
If the auction had extended just once for 2 minutes & 30 seconds then I would have still been the high bidder as I had "put in my best bid in"
What pizzed me off was the auction continued to extend the time until the bidding finally stopped.
All this does is allow the vendor (who happens to own the site) to push up the price to your maximum bid or beyond in this case.

I don't think you'd be to pleased if you were at your local car auction & you've bid on a no reserve car & you're the high bidder & the auctioner goes going once, going twice, third & fin........ Oh hang on I think we can get a few more quid out of this, anymore bids. Then someone sticks there hand up so you bid a bit more & the process continues until you are prepared to bid no more. It's not how an auction works if you ask me.

If you look in the bid history you will see all the bids that were made after the auction should have ended.
My first & only bid was made at 21:17.50 straight in at £2500 with 10 secs to go.
But on the bidders list it shows my first bid as £2525 at 21:19.12

Waiting for the second chance offer or phone call next to say the high bidder hasn't collected. Because it was them trotting me up no doubt to see how much my bid was.

I have too agree with Paul. I think that its a great way to stop 'sniping'.

E.G. Say something is worth £40. It gets bid up to a bit lower than that price £33, 2 people bid high sniping bids in the closing seconds say £70 and someone else bids £80 at the same time and the screen has not refreshed. The winning bid gets it for £75 due to proxy bid. Now its going to be hard getting the £80 bidder to pay up so you end up re-listing only for the same thing could happen again !

And not wanting to stir things up...........

On the M&J.com site it does say under the T&C's. 8th paragraph down under When bidding on easysalvage auctions & breakers auctions you agree to the following:- The close time is a guide ending time & is not set in stone, if you bid within the last 3 minutes of the auction it will be extend by another 2 minutes as it is a live auction not closed bids.

Now I'm no legal expert, but using 'set in stone' in T&C's seems shoddy to me

I have to say I completely disagree with the sentiment regarding not allowing sniper bdding. In fact it's the "fools" that bid and bid and bid, thinking this is the way to win an item that push the price up.

In a "proper" auction you get people you know in the room and you can sus which way it will go, on ebay you've no idea who's watching, bidding or waiting in the wings. The only way to combat that would be to publish the "watching auction" and page visited figures, with no "opt out" function.

Sniping is in fact more honest because, unless you set something mind boggling, which some bid anyway (with or without sniper tools), you set yourself a budget and if someone "goes mental" then let them have the item. "A fool and his money" etc.

No, on the contrary, I think you are more likely to get an honest reflection of the true value of an item with the use of sniper bidding, if the snipe fails the person doesn't get the item anyway.
As regards, extending auctions that should simply be outlawed, it's clearly a rip off, otherwise why do it. The honest way is to have an auction end and stick to that, then everyone knows where they stand.
