I have owned quite a few of both and have generally liked them equally.
The Audi i have now is the most "complete" car i have owned. It does it all for me.Its fast, spacious and pretty economical with a good residual value. All this does come at the price though. As ever quality costs.

I went from an A4 2.0Tdi Avant to a 320d SE Touring recently (not mine as such as they are company cars). The 320d is 180PS and the A4 was 120PS (only made this model for a short while), yet the 320d gets 4-5mpg more driven like for like. The A4 was very nose heavy and not much fun to hustle and being the 120PS version, pretty slow too whereas the 320d being rear wheel drive is nicer handling (IMHO) and much quicker due the extra power.
Probably slightly unfair comparison though as the 320d is a higher spec due to a promotion I had a little more budget and they are putting on more 'extras' as it's a run out 'Exclusive' version with leather, heated seats etc. As someone else said Audi drivers seem to be taking the heat regarding being pushy drivers, so no doubt that will change to BMW now.
Having said that, I'll probably look at an A4 in 3 years time as I get bored looking at the same dash for 100,000 miles or so.
