are there any rules about guys with small businesses being members on the forum?

was chatting to a guy at a show recently, panel beater, fabricator etc who has recently setup on his own after learning the business working for others for years. His passion is obviously old fords and thats what he wants to concentrate on. i build websites, mainly for big companies, we eventually got talking about that... i suggested rather than worry to much about his own website he join up on forums, post pics on the builds etc he has done/is doing, show what his skill is, provide a load of pics we like to look at etc, after all my feeling was his potential customers are more likely to be found on specialist forums than coming across his own site from searching google.

He told me he had tried joining one forum before, but thought he had to pay upfront to sponsor if he was a business and wanted to be a member. Obviously only recently started up, things no doubt are pretty tight so although i got the impression would potentially be up for paying to be a site sponsor in the long term, it was pretty hard to justify throwing cash at it up front.

personally it feels we need the experts on the forums too, great to see the pics of the work they do, draw on their knowledge when we have questions etc, so was surprised that was he thought

can someone clarify what the rules are on here

    cheers

Many members such as myself on here are "Legitimate Traders"

Whilst there is no ruling that Traders have to have an advertising banner - DETAILS HERE ! the same "advertising" rules apply as to all members

Whilst there is no charge to advertise each advert must be individualy priced, idealy with location and contact details (not just PM me etc)

The following adverts/threads carry a £30 levy - Whats it worth ?, Make me an offer !, Not selling at the moment but am testing the water (with no price), generic "open" type adverts such as I mend cars so PM me etc) - if ANY member makes such an advert without first sending £30 to Paypal dave@rs2000custom.co.uk then their use of this "Free Site" will become very restricted or non existent

Just to clarify a one off "open" advert is £30 but 12 months banner at the top of every page of this website (on a rotation basis) is £75 - bit of a no brainer really

As a legitimate busines your friend will soon realise that he must budget within his accounts for advertising costs as without them he will struggle to get his name known.

thanks Dave, thats what i thought the deal was really..

at this stage was just saying he should just get involved online, help in the technical queries area, start threads on mk1/mk2 builds in Basket Case's, Restoration's and Ongoing Projects on his project, give us pics to look at so we can see what he does, do a signature with his company name in it etc. As a member of the forum i got the impression other guys in the business got involved like this without having to pay up front to join in

as an escort owner/enthusiast its all about these forums, personally i'm far more likely to notice companies who are actively involved in them.

i think £75 for a year's banner ad is damn reasonable if you ask me, i've visited the sites of pretty much all the companies that have banners on here as a result of their adverts

      thanks for clarifying
