Meanwhile the Ford engineering dept started a kitty to pay for the development costs of designing a medium size saloon with front wheel drive.

They knew that upper management wouldn't sanction spending money on a white elephant like FWD, so decided to go it alone.

As it was it took them another 13 years to scrimp enough money together to afford to design a front wheel drive replacement for the Sierra.
