  • whats best original tidy car or fully retored

what would you rather have a fully restored welded nut bolt concours resto or a genuine untouched original tidy car ???

I can see arguements for both but I do like a concours car, think i'd prob prefer something like i got, original panels etc but restored ie repainted etc.

like my one! all original Mk1 Mex, never welded, still in its original Sebring red paint, zibarted from new which helps keep the rot at bay, does not get scared of a drop of rain now and again. All standard but with the optional Custom pack. May well get her out today as the weather should be good, once the mist lifts.

I agree with this, but I'm biased as that's pretty much my car (except the respray was done back in 1985 so even the paintwork is over 25 years old ). However, as I'm doing some repairs to the wing rail area (about 4-5 inches long), I can't strictly say my car is 'untouched' either. I was tempted to have mine professionally resprayed after I've finished the repairs, but I think it would be better just to do any small localised repairs instead to avoid it becoming over restored.

I always thought that cars like MGBs, that can have a brand new bodyshell from Heritage, aren't really a restoration. I kind of view these like a replica. They don't usually end up with the original trim and fittings so very little of the original car is left, so IMHO the history is gone. Same goes for Escorts that have been rebuilt from some other car's shell (especially when it's not even an RS shell).

This isn't to knock some of the excellent work that appears on here, but just that I question how these cars can be considered original enough to be entered in concours.
