The problem when you modify forum software is that its done on the fly, so any problems have to be addressed whilst its being used.
Unless you take the site done completely which isnt favourable when you have paying sponsers, plus you need users to test drive it to see if it works
it obviously didnt work for them this time but im sure they will be doing work in the background to make work next time out
