History: Dolmite Sprint was built by Roger Dowson at Gerry Marshall Racing, as a production saloon, in the late 70s. It was first raced by Chuck Nicolson (Charles Nickerson) in the British Uniroyal and Monroe Production Saloon Car Chapionships. In 1980/1981 it was raced by Roger Payne, winning both championships. It held class lap records at every major UK circuit. It was then campaigned by Henry and John Rice through 1982/84. In 1985 it subsequently passed into the hands of Peter Brown, who stored the vehicle until 2004. When Ken Clarke purchased it in a deal for a job lot of rare race spares. He then sold it on to Bob Kett who systematically restored the car over a 5 year period, useing the vast knowledge and skills of Ken Clarke. Ken did extensive work to upgrade the car for todays race standards and specification's. The car sold in 2010 at an auction in Oxford and then in 2011 i purchased it.

          Dolomite Sprint

Terry Kaby used to rally one in about1977/8,and won the British group N championship, with it,but it did have lots of trouble with Head gaskets going ,Ken Brown did the Colin McRea rally with one this year, and it looked and went well.
Roger Dowson, was based at Silverstone ,and prepared a Mazde 6 for touring Car racing for Slim Borggud an the 80s/90s

GpN? You're getting too young again!
Gp1 - engine-wise the Dolomite was probably the the worst offender in the creative Gp1 homologation stakes. 1600 Gp1 was, of course, Avenger GT-dominated after another creative homologation of carbs - and, allegedly, a word in the ear of the appropriate people to ensure the Mk1 Mexico was homologated at 1601cc rather than 1598cc...). Over 1600 Gp1 was something of a "golden era" with RS2000, 2.3 Magnum, "Brazillian block" Avenger GT and Dolomite Sprint all capable of winning the class (and hence the category overall).
The Gp1 Dolomite Sprint did it on power (200bhp??), a bit more than the Magnum and quite a bit more than the better handling Avenger and RS2. Otherwise it was a pretty crap car...
Abingdon mechanics Brian Moylan and Terry Read insisted to me it had far too much rubber in the rear suspension to ever make it the clear best car in Gp1 or remotely competitive in Gp2 (also lacking power or potential power in the latter). Like the Gp2 16 valve BRM Avenger, the thing it lacked to ever make it a great rally car was a BDA...
