I have to agree with the 'it's your car so do as you please with it' replies. There seems to be a bit of an 'RS Police' element on this forum and at the end of the day, it's only an Escort not some utra rare one off Bugatti or something.

FWIW I always think it's a shame when you see a really immaculate old car but it's in a lousy colour as many 70s cars were. I don't agree that a vinal roof means it's not a real RS, but I have to say that I'm not keen on them myself, or some of the dodgy looking interior colours. Of course I could be considered 'boring' as mine is black with a black interior, though I prefer red and if I wasn't going to sell it soon I'd considered respraying it red myself. Having changed the colour of a car once before (Mk3 Escort before anyone threatens to hang me ) it took ages as I had to get to all the little areas under the bonnet, door hinges, in the boot etc. That car was a horrible metallic green and I resprayed it Rosso red, much nicer IMHO.

Ford made all the RS's, if I remember correctly, and they made them with brown interiors and vinyl roofs, and painted them classic colors like signal green & signal yellow. People had a choice and bought and them.
If you prefer the colors & trims of today, blacks, greys & silvers -then dont buy an old car.

I stated my opinion and thats that! Its anyones perogative not to agree with me as its your opinion! End of. I do not like vinyl roofs, as in my opinion it was used by many car manufacturers to make the car look like a cabriolet.
If anyone has a sad on with my posting so what, get over it, and move along! Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Hello Kelvin, It does seem the bufty & RS brigade are trying to take over. Well good for you lot. Owners should be able to do what you what they want with their cars as it's their property. If you want a fight on this board grow up, its meant to be fun!

In Fact Brown interiors ans vinyl roofs are probably the ones to go for these days as they are not so `common` as yourself with black and are a bit more exclusive as not so much of them

Just stating my opinion mr jimmer so get over it too

Do whatever you want pal, at some point in its life my car was colour changed from venetian red to black.
It looks great in black and also would look great in its original colour.
I might change it back one day but ultimately it's my choice not the rs police.
I am not selling the car ever so have little interest in other people worrying about originality or resale value

I have to laugh at the way it's sooooo important to keep the original colour, etc, even though when you look at some of the resto threads on here, they are replacing half the floor of the car, cutting out the bulkhead, inner wings, outter wings, etc so there is a fair chunk of the 'original' car gone anyway.

Maybe for a really original car that has ALL of it's factory fitted panels and trim you could argue that it would be a shame to change the colour, but only if you're going to sell it anyway. Otherwise you may as well have it in a colour you like IMHO.

For some strange reason when you see very original cars (and not just Escorts either) they are often in the less exciting colours. Maybe the kind of person that chooses these colours from new is the kind of person that tends to look after their car better (like the people who keep the plastic on their sofas ).

I read your post and I accept your comment is "in your opinion"

FACT though is that proper RS cars DO have vinyl roofs and brown interiors.

My opinion is that your comment was incorrect and put across in the wrong way. You may not like vinyl roofs and brown interiors but that does not mean they are not proper RS cars.

This thread is asking a simple question. My response would be keep the original colour, BUT its up to the individual what he does with his car.

So Chesney you say " Fact is that proper RS cars have vinyl roofs and brown interiors" thats crap, the fact is; SOME RS cars have vinyl roofs and brown interiors.
I do accept though after I had a skinfull last night, I could have put my views across to board members differently and maybe more politically correct in these "soft" times, as so many are easily offended. I will get my coat and leave very quickly ! Its a good thing this board is for fun !

Is it? I'm starting to wonder you see with all the RS police that won't allow someone to fit arches and alternative paint colours. Yet they seem to be happy to allow blatant profiteering on overpriced NOS parts to make cars as 'original' as possible (despite them mostly being restored using pattern body panels).

Do whatever you want BUT, It will de-value the car come to sale time. I used to own a Venetian red RS2000 (FHL 860V) which I stupidly changed to black after restro. When I came to sell it, it was a nightmare to shift and it was all due to the colour change!!! But then, That was 15 years ago.............
