Ruthin Castle is very nice, stayed there a few years back, great food and nice people.
Ruthin Castle Hotel & Spa is a beautiful retreat and spa hotel in North Wales, steeped in history & nestled in acres of parkland. Book direct online!
Some great roads as well, just a shame I wasn't in the RS at the time.
Best sign was when we crossed into Wales it read "Welcome to Wales" then on the side of the bus stop about 50meters down the road, a local had sprayed "English go home", made me laugh.

They warned me about the locals being strange, and speaking Welsh about them when they walked into pubs etc.
When I went with them to the pub, they were clearly paranoid. I am a Welsh speaker and they were not talking about them at all. They were simply speaking their first language. Granted, English sentences do slip in occasionally and it may appear to the likes of you that they are ignorant. Well, have a re-think sir.
After all, when you go to France, the French don't speak English just to keep you happy do they ?

Agree with Aled, I have a few welsh speaking friends, it does seem to be the guys that live in North West Wales that are the ones that choose to speak their first language all the time.
Even when English people are present, I do get the odd apology when they start speaking Welsh if I'm part of the conversation, I just take pizz, lifes to short to take offence.
Russ if you are Holidaying around the Barmouth area I'd go a little bit further up the coast & use Harlech or Porthmadog as a base.
Places to visit around those areas http://nantcolwaterfalls.co.uk/walks.html great for a picnic or barbie. Not far from Harlec
Another nice place http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aberglaslyn_Pass not far from Porthmadog & a great ride if you carry on through beddgelert there are a couple of lakes on the way up to the Llanberis pass you could then carry on to Caernarfon where no one will like you & they speak Welsh.
As for beaches Harlec Beach is nice & sandy & there is an old plane surfacing in the sand
Also blackrock sands you can drive on the beach there. There's Criccieth next door.
Also on the other end of the Lynn penisula is Abersoch So plenty around that are to do. Oh there are a few castles around there too.Mark....

Russ,
why not come to the Beautifull south.
As Ash states, the Gower is fantastic, also same for Tenby and surrounding area.
both offer fantastic beaches, walks etc
the Gower is near Swansea therefore great nightlife (visit Windstreet ) and also shopping if needed, great place.
Tenby is more for the beaches and plenty (Plenty) of pubs / nightlife there.
alternatively, What a great city Cardiff is, with easy access via a short drive to quiet beaches, the Brecon Beacons, fantastic nightlife and plenty of shopping and things to do.
Finally, ref the Welsh speaking debate, quite often people mistake 'spoken English' in some parts of Wales for 'spoken Welsh', due to the 'speed' and local dialogue involved.
wherever you go, Everyone is friendly and welcome
finally, dont forget that if you are in the South wales area, the Flatters Rally is on Saturday 31st July on epynt, great scenery, loads of action, and well worth a visit.

I think you'd have to travel a very long way to visit better beaches than the ones which can be found in wales. My own preference is for Camarthenshire, with places such as Tenby, Saundersfoot, Manobier and Caldey Island.
The picture above was taken about 2 oclock in the afternoon on Caldey.
Tenby has a huge number of pubs for its size, and some superb hotels along The Esplanade.
Manobier is good for surfing and if you like walking google "The Pembrokeshire Coastal Path
And if you do go, make sure you visit Pendine Sands and the small museum dedicated to Land Speed Record attempts held there.
