As the 1st of July gets closer , I'm reminded of start of the battle of the Somme 96 year ago tomorrow..
The worst day ever in the British army,s history.
Close to60,000 casualties on the first day of the battle, over19000 killed, what a waste of young men.. At the going down of the sun and in the morning , we shall remember them..

Also the date of the first day of Gettysburg, costliest battle in US history (although the costliest single day was Antietam, the year before).
