  • Warning to all HGV drivers

Monday night one of my drivers had an object thrown at his HGV from the bridge over the M1 at jct10 (Luton area) northbound.
This is not the first time our vehicles and others have had items thrown at them in the Luton area.

Thankfully the object didn't go though the windscreen but it did shatter the windscreen forcing the driver to make an emergence stop on the motorway, there was no hard-shoulder due to the on going roadwork’s so this meant he had to stop in Lane1 forcing other vehicles to take evasive action.

Shards of glass from the inside of the screen showered the driver, due to this the Ambulance crew took the driver to hospital to check his eyes, thankfully no glass had entered his eyes and he was fine just a little shaken up.

This could have been a lot worse as most drivers have cruise control on, if the driver was knocked out his fully laden HGV would have carried on at 50mph until it hit a solid object taking out other motorist along the way.

If you drive for a living or just using the motorways, give the over-passes / bridges a glance, if you see people just hanging about be prepared to take evasive action, best to check what other vehicles are around/near you as well.

    Objects from bridges

I teach drivers of all classes, and have done for over 50 years now,AND on all driving lessons ,were there are any OVERHEAD roads or bridges i TEACH,that you SCAN the bridges well before you get to them ( It takes Milli seconds). My reasoning is that if anyone is going to throw any thing from a bridge ,then you can change lanes ,hopefully if you anticipate it happening. But generally ,dont put Cruise on and ,not look ahead and plan!! Cruise dose not mean you can stop concentrating !!!

This was a big problem driving thu Belfast.
All bridges are now covered with horrible netting.
At least the new ones are covered with a bit of taste?
Your driver was lucky not to be killed.

Some old coverage before the grills.

There are right f***ing stupid scumbags out there!

It's all a big game to some people, they want strapping into a car and which somebody drops a block of wood or breeze block onto. They wouldn't do it again
