PMSL I remmber that jacket, my barnet was still ginger then as well
what year was that ??
As Dal says I love a 16i too, had a few, tried an S1 as well, but didnt really gell, would have another 16i tomorow sold my last one to Taffr on here, bottom line is though I prefer RWD and you can only have so may toys
Mk3s are great cars and deffo old skool just in a different way ld love another early xr3
Surely these cars are either "old skool" or not? What's old skool in a different way?
I personally think that cars like the MkII Escort, were the last in the mould of the old-fashioned classic cars. You get into a MkI or II and you step back in time. A MkIII is also a bit of a jolt compared to modern cars, but tbh it's a completely different feeling.
For me a MkIII Escort, be it an RS Turbo or an RS 16i, is a modern classic.
Some would even say an Onion 16i Ghia is a classic. If people want to call an RS 16i a classic then surely the Onion was one of the first really affordable "luxury" small cars. The market is flooded with them now but back then there weren't that many cars that were practical, smart and had loads of toys.
As said, why would anyone want to call the MkIII an "old skool" classic is beyond me, clearly there is no lnk back to the Mk I or II, different floorpan, different engines, and completely different feeling car all round.
It will never be RWD and so whilst it 'must be' RWD to be old school according to the masses then it never will be . Until this glass ceiling is smashed, we will always be the modern machines of satan.
I think its just down to my age that I prefer the MK 2 cars. I took driving lessons in one and once I passed my driving test I bought a Mexico. The RS Turbo was introduced around then and the Mk 2's were a little aged but I prefered them. Eventually I owned a Mk 3 and I found it not as much fun....So nothing personal Vinny.
Having watched this thread continue I'm starting to feel I may have been a bit on the defensive. Seems plenty of the old school have a bit of time for the MKIII's, even owning them!
I think on reflection I quite like the 'modern classic' qouted earlier and maybe they are step on in build, looks etc.
My 16i should be around for a few years yet unless I can find a genuine black big wing MKI.
That Gartrac car used to come over to the early East Yorks Regional Days and I really do like it.
I sold my mk2 escort for this mk3 xr3, i must admit i didnt like all the plastic around me in the car, but overall i liked the outside of it, had another mk3 xr3i after this one, then a mk4 xr3i, but i always wanted to get a mk2 again, and now i have one i aim to keep it
I've just been looking trough the awesome lakes tour pictures. Awesome cars guys Im a mk3 owner myself, I own a RS1600i. Im guessing most of you guys on here will say never because they are FWD, but looking through the pictures the mk3's would not look out of place in the line of mk1's, 2's, cortinas etc etc. IMO of course.
They are almost 30 years old now so are certainley old enough to be old skool, but will they ever fit in?
Just found this thread No they never will be old skool and thats coming from the mk3 addict lol there modern looking , not much different from a mk4 altho i really can't gel with mk4's , but have a bad obsession with mk3's as you know i have always loved mk2's i think i was about on the changeover when all the young lads of the time went from mk2's to the mk3 , as i'm a tad older than you Lee and can just remember the young lad's having the mk2's and they were cool i like the rally breeding of them massive spots on the front , forest arches etc , but i have allways been a die hard mk3 fan, the first car i ever drove at 15 on a industrail estate was a mk3 , but i would love a mk2 mexico to add to the collection but there just so pricey these days
