Police officers who were forced into early retirement in Birmingham have told brmb radio it is an insult they’re being asked to come back and work for free.
The West Midlands force made 300 of their most experienced officers take retirement early to cut costs… even though many did not want to go.
This week, they have all had letters sent out by the force asking them to come and work as special constables – voluntarily.
John Rollason served for 31 years before being told to go…
“It’s show that they actually need us. It is going to have an affect, and they do need us back there, but why should we do it for nothing?”
An ex-Inspector is one of those who plans to return to West Midlands Police on a voluntary basis, despite being made to retire in April. His decision led to the force sending out a letter from him to the others in his situation.
West Midlands Police told brmb in a statement:
“West Midlands Police were approached by an officer who was retiring under A19 and re joining as a Special Constable. He wished to write to his colleagues to ask them to consider remaining as a Special Constable upon retirement.”
“Retiring officers can offer unique skills and experience which could benefit our communities if they are interested in volunteering as a Special Constable. ”
“West Midlands Police will support officers retiring under A19 who wish to consider this option.”
