don't want to hark on about it , but on a semi modern note, the old Pug 309 gti's were great handling cars, fwd yes, but it handled so much like a rwd car in an oversteering situation - a lot less "skitish" than the 205's, i guess thats why Peugeot started with the 205 then went over to the 309 as the car of choice for their rallying exploits as it handled so good - Burns, Mcrae, Delecour can't be wrong

as for modern modern, i dunno

S-Type R, 400 bhp, bury your right foot in the carpet and you won't be too worried about the handling (well not until the first corner), great fun those...

The nearest thing to an Escort but a bit newer is a BMW from before 1990 . E28 5 series' (Alpina's , M535i's and M5's) are the best of the bunch and can hold a slide great but still not as good as an Escort . E30 3 series cars are pretty fun but a bit twitchy on the limit compared to E28's .
Real drivers have mk1/2 Escorts though , nothing comes close to them .
sigpic 2.1 ATMO YB POWER .
Tick tock goes the clock and the clock don't lie .
12.4sec to 109mph With NO turbo , NO gay trailer , NO slicks , NO gas , NO race fuel and NO bits missing . Beat that !!!!

My highly subjective list and if we are chucking in drive from the wrong end too....

mk2 Golf GTI, makes pently of noise inside, plenty of vinyl, have that chuckability and fun factor that's missing from modern cars. Built as well as a Pazer tank vs French car built as well as a clown car. Cheap parts when they are needed and you don't get laughed out of the main dealers like you would with a Ford for a 80's car. Misses has a 8V for 5yrs and its a great car to drive and I've owned a few as well. Can see 40MPG on the motorway too !

Ford Puma, only done about 20 miles in one now cheap but watch for rust. Racing Puma for the more manly....

At the right wheel drive and Jag theme, X300 XJR switch the traction control off and they slide really well for a motor that tips the scales at nearly 2T. @16MPG Big pockets are needed to run it though, but all is forgiven as its a Jag after all.

                            Cars for the fool hardy.....
Morris minor with a Zetec fitted and disk brake conversion??? I had a 1098 with big wheels and drums all round good job as momentum is everything!! A good laugh to drive.
Never owned but seem like lots of fun a Caterham/Westfield....Spring is here after all..
                            Steve
