How do you obtain previous V5 details etc

Hi

I have seen a number of references on the forums to folks tracing back the history of their car and getting hold of old V5s etc. I would love to trace back the history of my RS. How has this been done? I have trawled the direct gov web site and cant find any way to search for historic reg owner details etc.

Nay ideas?
