heard on the news today that every vehicle no matter what condition has to be compulsary insured.the new law is to be introduced in the spring ie soon.letters due out explaining the law next week.expect all the hidden away cars and log books to come up for sale soon then.

The rule is, if a car is taxed it must also be insured, as Dave says simply SORN it.

DVLA have brought quite a few changes in, if your thinking about dropping a 2 litre in an 1100 Pop it will now not be so easy to change the engine size and number on the log book, they are getting tough on the home diy'er, engine swaps have to be checked by a qualified engineer (or perhaps an MOT trained person) and a report made to DVLA, you may also have to prove the engine was available for that specific model and all conversion parts are factory items or upto the job.

So does this make a logbook with a 2 litre on it even more valuable

My understanding of this is that it is for cars that have a current Tax disc will require to be insured. If they are SORN'ed it will not be a requirement.

As it stands these days, what many drivers are doing is taking out insurance in order to get a Tax disc. Then, within a month or two they cancel their payments and the insurance becomes invalid, but in their eyes a current Tax disc will prevent them from being stopped by Police. ANPR is a system that finds these individuals out.

I very often sympathise with drivers who find the current climate difficult and rising fuel and insurance costs, but nevertheless I also think uninsured drivers wreak absolute havoc to law abiding road users and also send our premiums higher than needed to subsidise them in times of need. The introduction of this scheme is a worthwhile idea in my opinion.

ALL vehicles should be made to display a "Tax Disc" style badge which displays the registration number and vehicle type and proves it is insured for a minimum of 3rd part road risk (regardless of who is driving as long as they are "legal" to drive of course)

ANY vehicle then seen "on the road" with no insurance disc can then be confiscated for non-display just as non-taxed vehicles are

Get rid of car tax all together, add it on to fuel, bet it would be less than 1/2p a litre, this is being collected anyway so no extra costs. Huge slash in government costs, no way to avoid paying, you pay for what you use, our old cars with small mileage would not have to be taxed . I have 4 cars and 3 vans all but 1 taxed, 3 of which only i drive. But i can only drive 1 at a time , the others are off rd. Boils my pi** everytime i tax them!
Suppose it still doesn't get rid of the insurance issue though! (don't believe anything they try will stop the hardcore, buy it taxed/mot'ed, drive without ins , plenty doing it!)

Yep compulsory here too, along with tax disc and NCT (our mot) for cars over 4 years old. Cars over 30 don't require NCT but if you're bringing one in now the NCT centre has to do a car check before you pay import duty
