  • Mk2 RS2000 Production Quantities

    Hi guys,

    I'm not sure if this is the right place for this thread but:-

    I'm looking for some info regarding the production quantities of the Mk2 Escort. Specifically, how many 2000cc Mk2 2-door Escorts were made with flat fronts. I am led to believe that the South African version of the RS2000 did not have the nosecone, but were there any other territories where Ford sold a 2000cc 2-door version of the car and where can I get the production figures for these?

    Hi the south african ones did have nosecones, attached shortcut shows magazine articles from the launch over there.

      Australia sold 2 door escorts fitted with the 2.0 ohc engine, standard flat front shells, they even sold escort vans with factory 2.0, but Oz RS's had the nosecone.

        Actually Ruddy,

        it was the Australians who homolgated the flat front RS2000 into group 1. A copy of the group 1 homologation papers show the Australian rally pack which was a 2ltr car but not called an rs2000 see photo of my touring car which is a period bathurst racer based on group 1 specs with certain allowances.

          As has been spelt out many times on here, The Royal Automobile Club (as the agents of the FIA in the UK) homologated the flat front RS2000 as the 3rd (3rd, not 2nd) bodywork evolution of the original Mk1 RS2000.
          The fact that it quoted "Australian production" didn't mean there was any actual involvement from Australia.

            I have here (and very fortunate to have a set of the originals) the Homologation forms for The RS2000 (with nose cone) Homologation number A-5035, and also The RS2000 flat front Homologation number A-5036


            i have scanned the covers, however they are too delicate to remove from the 'Sleeves'

            hope it is of interest

                  Ford AVO in the UK, as the Mk1. Which is why susequent "evolution" to the original homologation was handled by the RAC in the UK, despite the Mk2 RS2 being primarily a German (not Australian) car.

                    Try telling that to those who homologated the Chevette HS in 1976 before a single production car had been built...

                    (and no, production of the full quantity was not actually officially required then. Proving "provisions for" production of the relevant quantity was the earlier wording. Just like when 5000 Mk1 Lotus Cortinas were produced in a year for homologation into the new Appendix J Group 1 for 1966 - a bit difficult when about 3500 Mk1 Lotus Cortinas were produced in total over 3 and a bit years? Same goes for 5000 in a year for Gp 1 homologation of the Mk1 RS2. How many of those were built in total (about 3500 again?)?
