Part time or retained stations are much cheaper to run than full time stations, but they cannot provide some of the specialist roles due to only training for 2 or 3 hours a week compared to what a wholetime firefighter will do, the flip side of this is that often the retained firefighter will have attended more actual jobs than a whole time firefighter, also the response times will be slower especially for 2 pumps due to the time it takes to get to the station.
At the end of the day most brigades will be looking to save money so terms and conditions will be attacked, I dont think this will be the last threat of strikes.
