Last Sunday I was at the gate of "Trafficport" (the venue in Venlo where we had our Classic Ford event) from 7am until 9.30am to let traders, VIP's and staff in before we opened for the public. Around 8 a somewhat elderly gentleman (55-ish) drove towards me in his Daihatsu Sirion and said he wanted to get in to see all those nice old Escorts. Told him the gate wasn't open yet and that he could pay and get in from 9am onwards. He then asked what the entry fee was; I said 10 euro per person.
Saw that he was not amused ... soon became clear that he came all the way from Ieper (Ypres) in Belgium to visit the event, that he borrowed a car to drive to Venlo and that he forgot his wallet and only found 3,80 euro in cash in the car.
Then he went back to his car, came back again with David Sutton's biography book which he said DS signed for him and that he wanted me to have it as security and that he would send the entry fee to me plus postage costs to send the book back to him. Looked at the book and it seemed that DS really did signs his book (I have one also) so asked him if he knew DS. Yes he said, he bought a famous reg-plate from a Mk1, had Gartrac prepare a shell for him, and now DS was "restoring" this famous car!
So took his DS book (that'll teach him to drive 200miles with only 3,80 euro in his pocket), exchanged addresses and I let him in. On Monday I posted the book back to him and hopefully I'll get the 10 euros back.
Now for the quiz-question: which car was he talking about???
