  • Mk1 Escort kit car

Who likes the mk1 Escort kit car in this months RetroFord mag then ? Anyone thinking of selling up and buying one for tracks as it should be much better than a real Escort with it's superior suspension design and stiff lightweight spaceframe construction . Discuss

Fooook that , i'm not selling mine . If i was into track racing then i would certainly upgrade to one but as mines a " comfy" street car i reckon it's better than any spaceframed plastic special could be at that (heater , lush carpets with soundproofing , padded recaros , windows that go up + down etc ) . Not sure if it's road legal either , i suppose it could be with the right parts on it ??? At least it won't rust though .

Well at least they've built the car with a mk1 Escort look and not a Sierra or Mondeo body shape , gotta be pleased with that . The feature says you can buy one in kit form and build it yourself with various engine combos . Just imagine a full monty 8500rpm 16v Pinto inside the lightweight spaceframe chassis ripping around circuits and you can see it's appeal to the track queens . Most original escort track cars will be shite slow in comparison , like comparing Noahs Ark to a Steath bomber .

A friend of mine did look into it a while back as a race car and the cost comparison between the spaced framed plastic Escort and preparing a good clean Mk1 shell was unbelievable. Far far cheaper!

No prices mentioned in the feature so can't comment . A decent original escort track weapon would be £20,000-£30,000 so not sure where the kit car fits into this price scale . Dearer or cheaper ????

From what he priced up, making the frame, suspension, odds and ends etc, the space framed car was by far the cheapest option. I don't know who the company was supllying the shell but I remember a rough figure of £3K ish I think. That was for the lot just bolt it to your frame and off you go. This was about 18 months ago or so and I can remember him saying, "I'm not bothered, as long as it looks like an Escort thats all that matters"
He hasn't done it though!...... yet.

Sounds good then . Cheaper to build , faster , easy to fix + work on , plus it saves smashing up the real ones !!!!!

I have wondered wether or not one could be constructed for rallying !
