The seller needs to mark the package 'personal gift' this usually gets you away from any customs charges
However if the seller marks on the package a value ( for insurance purposes ) you will end up paying import duty on the item. This will obviously depend on how much the item is worth.
Hope this helps

I got charged tax (£13.00) on goods from Oz
OH and Royal Fail charged me £18 for the privelidge of me paying them the charge and them forwarding the payment to the Tax man - if I didnt pay them the charge they said they would not let me have the package.
Also I was not able to pay the taxman direct so I was stitched up with the extra fees
BEWARE !

never been charged tax for small items from the states, bought an exhaust from america last year and got stung for £22 from customs, which was not too bad as it was around $450, so no need to worry me thinks foxy
do what a board member on here does, pay by cheque then cancel it

Even 'gifts' are now liable for import tax over a certain value of which I am now unsure?
If the final leg is undertaken by Parcel Force/ Post office then you will get nailed as per customs post.
The last item I had in had £9 import tax and £18 Parcel force handling charge!
