Used it a lot this year but bloody hate driving the god awful lothesome thing! Sold my golf and bought an impreza sti. Fantastic to drive but the fuel bills are horrendous. Spares can be sourced at reasonable prices if you stay away from the stealers. ( front and rear complete brake discs and pads for mine............2k ) keep the escort as you will regret selling it aftrer all your hard work. I hate mine getting wet but, it is only water now and not salt etc.

Had mine 9 years and covered just 2317 miles in it in that time. This year I have reneged big time on my cosseting of the fuc-king thing; I now drive it, wherever possible, regardless of weather. Today drove it from Huntingdon to Daventry, taking in a 1 hour stopover at Sainsburys to do some shopping. I parked it, had loads of comments and attention before getting past said supermarket's doors to purchase cheese and wine. Came out to an immense rain storm and fish-tailed into the petrol station of said supermarket. If you ask me values are dropping on these now and my approach is just drive and enjoy. When the rust re-appears, just get the mig and the plate steel out..

Frosticles: You call yours a "God awful loathsome thing". That's only because you've created a monster and if you can afford an Impreza Sti, then surely you can afford to drive and absorb the costs of Summer driving your Mex. As you allude to, Summer rain is vastly different to the extremely damaging Winter soup of salt/water. I wouldn't drive mine in that, but for now, bring it on...

Provided you have made a decent job of your restoration and have thoroughly protected the bodyshell with a decent undersealer/bodysealer, then your car will probably have more protection that it has ever had and so preventing or greatly reducing any corrosion from taking place.

                    Tim.
I've cheated here, as living on a narrowboat for the past three years has taught me about the true intricacies of corrosion prevention. Waxoyl is good stuff, but boat BITUMEN is better imo! My Mexico over the course of the next few days will be treated with 2 coats of Rylards Premium boat blacking on the underside. This is thicker than Waxoyl or underseal and will last 4 years immeresed fully in water before it starts to brittle. I have dared to cross the boundaries between automotive and marine sealing pretection and wager pure bitumen is better (though they are I will admit largely the same stuff repackaged!). This is a test I am prepared to rise too and given the cost of Waxoyl, the marine stuff is somewhat cheaper and just as easy to apply!!

It looks like im not the only one not getting much use out of the car, been a beautiful day here today and what am I doing, up a bloomin ladder all day painting and fixing the roof.

Wont be selling because its what I always wanted, even if its only getting used on the lakes tour once a year.

I try to get out in my 1600 sport once a week to give it a run and keep all the internals coated in oil and stop stuff seizing up. I try to keep it dry but its pretty hard down here in NZ so it does get wet occaisonally. Not the end of the world though as its not like its living outside in the wet + the odd wet roundabout provides good entertainment haha

i use mine at least 3 times a week even if its nipping to the supermarket but i`m getting very close to my 3000 mile insurance limit as i taxed it a month earlier this year and i intend to tax it all year round this year and maybe up my mileage limit next year to 5 or 6 thousand miles.
