  • Fake shells

What are peoples views on the amount of type 49 shells that are modified from standard shells now being sold.
Can an RS or Mexico be really replicated by using a 1300l or xl shell.
I have a chance to buy a mint 1968 1100 super. Has Twin Cam interior, compression struts, front release bonnet, square headlights, sticky out petrol cap. Only difficult thing to buy seem to be is the silver dash, as all the mechanical and body parts can be sourced.
Shall I turn it into an early BB48 twin cam.
    Is it woth the hassle.
    Any views.

Not at all. I dont know anybody doing this.
It is easier and cheaper to buy a good shell than repair an old knacker.
As I am mainly interested in rallying where shells are heavily modified, originality it not really a concern.

up specing a shell isnt a problem but when you change the id on the shell is a problem, makin your mint standard xl shell in type49shell and sticking an old rotten mexico id onto the shell

theres loads of mexels out there

This always happens. I asked a question on the fitting of number plates on the bonnet of rally cars.
Caused such a dispute, I never got a straight answer.

Using standard shells is ok for me.
As long as the owner can be up front with the work done.
I am only finding out as I want to maybe buy myself a nice roadcar for shows and weekends, just wanted to know what is happening to the shells.

You can modify the shell to whatever you want but you cannot legally swap an id, i.e chassis numbers and tags, but plenty have done.

Like what has been said, you can do what ever you want to your shell but the Id must not change.
