  • Registering as an Historic Vehicle?

    Hi all

Going to view a mk1 tomorrow, registered apr 73, built nov 72 according to the vin no.

Had a look on DVLA site, apparently I need proof of the build date from Ford or a car club to register for tax exemption. Has anyone done this and how did it go?

Hopefully will have another "Gordon Brown annoyer" soon

      Scrapped?

I may be wrong also. but I dont believe it 'was scrapped' , just not moving on from that date. so any vehicle built after the fixed date will have to pay for road tax. Oh ahem, sorry think the correct term is 'vehicle licence' now.
yes thats right not a tax for the use of the roads but a tax for the privalege of owning a vehicle! !
Sorry again standing down from the soap box . . . .S

The facts as DVLA see it.

If your vehicle is registerd before the 1st January 1973:
All you have to do is go into you local DVLA office when you are taxing your vehicle & they will change the taxation class to historic vehicle & give you a tax disc.

Once this is done & your tax becomes due again, you can then tax your vehicle online or at the post office just the same as you do for your every day car & you get the tax disc for free.

If your vehicle is registerd on or after 1st January 1973 but built in 1972:
If you are a member of a club they will supply you a letter proving the car was manufactured in 1972. DVLA will then change the taxation class to historic vehicle.

DVLA will only change the taxation class at the time you intend taxing the vehicle, or if the vehicle is already taxed.

Cars used to become tax exempt as they became 25 years old.
The goverment put at stop to this is 1997 & it came into force on the 1st January 1998. Hence the cut off date being the 1st of January 1973 for vehicle getting tax exempt status.
        Mark....

So they did and so they still should - this is and always will be one of my BIGGEST rants!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At the very minimum car tax should be cumulative and incremental AFTER 1st Jan 73; having a tax exempt date and then full blown fees for ALL dates thereafter is fcucking criminal!! I forget how many online petitions I've signed from myriad classic car organisations; but of course they fall on ever deaf political ears.

That's the red party for you. It was the first thing they did when they got in. We are lucky they didn't undo all tax exemptions
