    LAKES TOUR 09
    RUNNER UP

I took it upon myself to put the Lakes tourforward as a nomination for Best club run/rally at the NEC Classic & Sports CarCompetition, not really knowing what was evolved I let it run its course, and to my surprise on Sunday morning. I was told that the Lakes tour came runner up which wasn’t bad considering there was numerous other nominees.

The Best Run/Rally went to the SP250 Alpine Experience, which was an event that the club’s tour organiser had been planning for a couple of years (despite being ill) and sadly died about a year ago. The bloke who’d helped him to recce the tour promised him that it would take place – and it did: about 2500 miles over the Alps through Switzerland and France.

The Lakes Tour was runner-up. We were really impressed with the way that your event has snow-balled over a few years.
This is part of the presentation from the Classic & Sports Car Club Awards at the NEC

Speaking at the awards ceremony at the Classic Motor Show on 14 November, Classic & Sports Car’s Editor at Large Simon Taylor said: “All sort of events were nominated for the Best Run. We liked the idea of the Volvo Enthusiasts’ Club A-Z Reliability Challenge. None of them broke – again. We also liked the way that the MG Car Club had added a new twist to its 59-year-old Silverstone gathering, with the Tour de Silverstone – with four drives to the event. And we were very impressed with the runner-up, the Cumbria Ford Lakes Tour, which has snowballed from 55 cars to 195 + over three years you are more than welcome to enter the awards again next year, so please do so.

Ford clubs did well in the awards in fact: the Mk1 Cortina OC National Rally won Best Club Show/Event (we liked the way that the various groups work together on that event), plus The Lakes Tour was the runner-up in Best Club Run/Rally, of course!

I’ve always had a soft spot for Mk1 Escorts because I had a summer holiday job at Tesco with a bloke who had a red Mexico. His CB handle was ‘Red Mex’, which tells you how long ago it was! (It was registered RCA 615M I think)

    All the best for now
