Our garage sits behind the pencil factory in keswick, with only one road in and out. We were at work and thought the river looks high, as it does get from time to time.
All the while the police and fire brigade were blocking the roads off not letting anyone in. It was only when Alison tried to bring me something down to work that the emergancy services relised that there was a garage down behined the pencil factory that was still open and working (thats dedication for you). At which point the road in was flooded so if you had a car at work it stayed at work, like my P100 and my Mexico.
The fire service sent someone down and told us to clear out, so everything for the escort was loaded into it and put up high.
Luckily when the river burst it only got as far as the garage door.

The sad thing is the local policeman who died, his daughter goes to the local school where my wife works and my youngest goes to in Egremont. It was apparently his birthday tomorrow!!
A guy from Sellafield was having a fag outside his front door in Northside, before setting off on first shift, just after 5am this morning, he was watching the torrent that was the river Derwent, in utter disbelief the bridge across the river just crumbled into the river. It was the one the policeman was on. If anybody knows this bridge they'll understand the shock that we're all in in West Cumbria, it was huge. The one further upstream nearer Seaton is apparently buckled aswell. It makes you appreciate the power that flood water has and I'll always treat flood water with the ultimate respect after seeing the devastation and experiencing the events of the last 24hrs first hand. I just amazed there haven't been more casualties. As Ruddy's and Oggie's pictures/videos show, we're insignificant in the grand scheme of things
