Chrome ring??? eh?? The headlights should have the fittings on the side of them to fit directly to the bowls via screws and 1 spacer and 1 adjuster.

Those Headlights will not fit directly into those bowls. They are effectively Mk1 lights or lights to replace the standard sealed beam units. Both the Mk1 and the sealed beam lights sit into a metal cage using the lugs you have on the rim at the back to locate them and then a chrome ring that goes over the lamp to hold it in place in the cage. That cage is sprung and allows adjustment for headlight level.

Your bowls will work with headlights that have lugs that protrude from the light casing as described by Frosticles above.

or, does the mk1 escort retaining ring fit onto the mk2 escort bowls?

and if so, where can i get one of these from?

I've replaced mine with VW Golf MK1 Hella lights which are easy to fit. They are definitely MK1 lights.

They are exactly the same light. The backs are diferrent though so you would need to do a little grinding so they will fit inside the bowl nicely you can buy them from GSF (German,Swedish&French Car Parts) or from myself. They are available in Hella and Depo.
