  • MotorSport Escort Builders and Chassis Numbers Used

Can anyone help in a question I have regarding a company back in the day who built MKII Escorts for rallying !

Which company/builder started their chassis numbers with LVL********/** ?

The last 2 digits were the year of manufacture I think.

I have also seen chassis numbers beginning SD***** was this Safety Devices ?

Not after specific chassis numbers only which builders used which prefixes.

Does anyone know any other builders and the Prefix's used for their chassis numbering ?

Some I have come across have chassis numbers beginning:-

    LVL
    SD
    CAF
    PCA
    DRF
    1CBA
    HML

    Thanx if you can help.

SD=Safety Devices, yes...probably. I´ve also seen this type of simple stamped metal strip on a ex. works Manta 400 shell. It had a number close to the one I´ve got on my shell. Probaly built later in the same year or the year after.

Someone once told me that there is a list around with all the produced/prepared Safety Devices shells and their first owners/customers...!?!

                gartrac

Gartrac do a nice stamped alloy plate to rivet to the shell.
From what i can make out very few ever fitted, but they have records of what shell ,what spec etc.

We have told Dave he should write a book!!!!!!!!!

                Would upset a few

                  Rally car builds

I agree with 68 Bullit SD is Safety Devises and PCA was definetly Peter Clarke Autos.I would also suggest that one of the JC ones is Jeff Churchills rally car build .Karl will confirm that
