  • My MK1

    Collected today

On 8th March 1983 Mrs Susan Hann went to M.H Gilby Motors,Camberley, the VAG agent and traded in her 1977 Scirocco GLS, she ordered a new MK1 Golf GTi in black paint with sunroof and tinted glass, she also asked the dealer on delivery to fit an ariel, mudflaps, upgraded door speakers and a twin headlamp 'Hella' grille, the total iclusive of extras was £7618, she was offered £1450 for her Scirocco.

In December 2004 , YPK, came back on the market for the first time since new, it was bought by Mr Walkingshaw, a director of Walkingshaw VW in Cumbria, at this time the car had covered 82,000 miles, still retained all its original panels and paint and full service history.

The car was put through the main dealer workshops, valeted, a few minor parking dings were removed by a dent removal specialist. The car was then put on display in the main showroom amongst the new VW models.

After a while the display space was required for buisness and YPK379Y was put into storage in the company warehouse.

Last November whilst getting my MK5 GTi serviced I asked as to the fate of the MK1, Andrew (Mr Walkingshaw) took me to see the car and said it isn't strictly for sale but if I was interested I could have it,I had known Andrew for many years, well its took me best part of a year to get round to buying the car, something TR or Escort related always got in the way.

The car was fully valeted, put through the workshops and put on display again in the showroom where I picked it up this morning. The boot is full of new unobtainable VW spares which they had bought just in case and all the history including the original bill of sale and service pack are filed on the back seat.

Might be a tight squeeze ...
