There are two sides to this arguement, who's to say that a nut and bolt restoration where virtually every part is changed and loads of rot cut out and new panels welding in couldn't be classed as a "fake" as well. There aren't many folk on here that can claim there car is as it left the factory....even the bufty brigade, they are worse than anyone because the level of perfection that goes into their cars is way above the standard that the car originally rolled off the production line!sigpic

What is an RS2000 or Mexico? Its a very simple car basically made up of a Cortina/Capri engine and gearbox bits in a slightly strengthened Escort 2 door shell, with a handful of specialised RS bits attatched to it.
Everybody wants an Escort and so the Escort RS has shot up in value so much that it is now beyond many a persons ability to being able to afford a decent example. What is left are 30+ year old cars, some requiring lots of work to the bodywork and some are just too far gone.
Modifying a standard Escort shell by fitting all the RS strengtheners is frowned upon by some purists for the simple reason is that it was not built in the factory like that. Is this unreasonable?
Modifying a standard shell is no different from what Ford did in the first place, so why does it really matter when this is done? Surely as long as it has been properly changed to RS spec, that is all that counts. In pure engineering theory, if you put the two shells alongside each other, what would be the difference? If useing a standard shell was not an option, a number of RS's would not exist now and some maybe would not be enjoying their concours wins, who knows?.
Personally if given the choice, I would prefer an RS that had been reshelled with a good solid standard shell professionaly adapted to RS spec, rather than a genuine RS one which was well beyond decent repair and should have been scrapped in the first place.
Tim.
