  • South African Mk2's

    Afternoon all

Question for the collective on Mk2's from SA. Has anyone brought one over here and if so, how did you do it and what did it cost ? Reason for asking is my cousin lives near Jo'burg and her Dad (my uncle) spotted a load of minty 1600 Sport's last time he was out there, now he wants to bring one here as a toy as apparently the ones he found were pretty much rust free. After he mentioned it I had a look myself and think I might get one over as well !

Only trouble is he's got a quote from a SA shipper for the best part of £3000 to get one sent in a 20ft container, from Durban to Southampton and quite frankly, that seems absurd.

Any help / pointers greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

    Mike

I don't think you will get shipped for any less money.

The best way to do it i think is to weigh up the pros and cons.

Cost of buying the car there versus here ,

            The cost of shipping
The cost of restoration on one from here versus one bought there (amount of work required)
This is how i would work out if its worth it or no

            Might help you

Get a shipping price for a 40 foot container any you will be able to fit 3 cars in it, also lots of room for spares (doors.roofs, grills, front cut section etc.).

Do your sums, flog off 2 cars & the spares and if done correctly you’ll have a free car.

I brought a container in from Australia about 3 years ago and a 20 foot was £1800 and a 40 foot was £2800 then.

                    Shipping

I was in South Africa for 5 weeks 2 years ago.I saw a mint VW westfalia camper ,1970,only 36 K in white ,at Capetown .He also had an immaculate 1978 mark 2 escort,BUT in 4 doors. As i wanted to do a replica RS1800 rally car that was no good.BUT he gave me the name of a shipping company, and said he could get it shipped for less than a grand.
I personally 2 years ago bought a brand new Kia Sorento XT in Cyprus arranged all the shipping ,and importing and registration ,saving over 8 and a half grand .Shipping from Limmasol was a mere £460.
I can tell you the shipper if you want to know .

                        Cheers chaps, much appreciated

The thought of a 40 foot container with as many cars & spares as we could lay our hands on has been bandied about Spend a week over there collecting as much as we can get, dump at Durban ans hopefully wait for it all to arrive here then flog off a couple of clean cars / shells to pay for the lot

Having recently spent 4 months in Oz and checked out the shipping costs from there, the cost from SA just surprised me in comparison.
