I was in the AVO club for 10 years in the early days . AVO cars were just regarded as normal bed and butter XR's , GT's etc back then , the only special ones where the twin cam and BDA models . All the clean Mexicos/rs2000's gave up their shells to save the rotten twin cam/BDA cars in the 1980's early 90's and were for sale in the autotrader for only 2 weeks wages . You couldn't give them away at one stage , i had about 4x of them at a time .

I bought 2x battery in the boot Mexicos in one week for £800 in 1986 !!!!! . I scraped one of them a built an MOTable one from the bits and put it in the Autotrader for £1,200 . It was in there for 4 weeks before i sold it and it was quite nice . The neighbours would moan about all my "shitty Escorts" outside and when i said they were "Mexicos" they just laughed and said they were just Dagenham dustbins covered in stripes !!!!!!!

£600 a week in 1986... What the hell did you do to earn that?

I used to get £350 a week in 1986 and a tatty Mexicos were £600 (or less) and nice ones £1200 . They were all 12+ years old and hanging normally . These weren't loved classic cars then , they were just old cars that nobody wanted except youngsters . All the flash blokes at work had 2.8 capri's and XR2' s !!!!!

lol , i had a full monty 1700 pushrod with barking carbs in 1986 which was built in the doorway of my mums flat !!!!! Even a novice mechanic with a Halfords adjustable spanner and a swiss army knife can fit one of those into an escort in 5 mins . It certainly didn't need an AVO factory !!!!!!

Concours cars with top notch restos go for more (but so do Beetles etc in the same condition , lol) but above is a realistic price guide for people selling cars .
