Henry Surtees, son of 1964 Formula One world Champion John, died following an accident in yesterday’s FIA Formula Two race at Brands Hatch.

After a successful first race where the 18-year old finished third. Surtees suffered a spin early in race two and was fighting his way back through the field when the accident happened.

Jack Clarke’s car hit the barriers at Westfield Bend loosing a wheel which hit Surtees in the head knocking him unconscious. His car hit the barrier heavily after Sheene corner.

After the death of a marshal in an F1 race in 2001, rule revisions introduced a wheel tether system to stop wheels flying off after an accident. This system was later adopted by IRL and is also used in the new F2 series, and should have prevented the wheel flying loose.

Red flags were rapidly deployed and he was extracted from the car before being transferred to the circuit’s medical centre, from there he was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital’s Trauma centre where he was later pronounced dead.

        how sad,
