Police dogs die in parked vehicle

The dogs died at the police headquarters at Sherwood Lodge

Two police dogs have died in a hot vehicle parked outside the headquarters of Nottinghamshire Police. An RSPCA officer was called to the Sherwood Lodge headquarters in Arnold on Tuesday and found two German shepherd dogs dead.
An independent vet is carrying out post-mortem tests to establish how the animals died.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said the force should investigate the deaths with the RSPCA.
    'Swiftly reported'
Nottinghamshire's Assistant Chief Constable, Peter Davies, said: "This is a tragic incident and we value the important work our police dogs carry out on a daily basis.
"That is why we swiftly reported this incident to the RSPCA and we will be working with them very closely."
In a statement Nottinghamshire Police said the welfare of all of its animals was "of paramount importance and we endeavour to take every measure possible to ensure their well-being and safety".
The force refused to say what kind of vehicle was involved.
The Met Office said it reached 28.1C (82.5F) in Nottingham on Tuesday.
Nottinghamshire vet Andrew Wilson said: "Dehydration would have been a big factor.

We are investigating and they are co-operating with us

    RSPCA spokesman

"They wouldn't be able to cool themselves because panting wouldn't be effective anymore, there would be no evaporation from the tongue.

According to our local news they were in a normal car not a dog unit vehicle.

Because of the tempratures involved no amount of panting will produce any saliva or moisture & heat exhaustion & dehydration will quite easily kill a dog within 20 minutes

I think it's funckin disgusting & no one should be allowed to get away with treating a animal in such a way.
Why they were in a car in the first place is beyond me.

I remember at Classic Ford 2007 hearing an annoucment over the tannoy that someone had left a dog in the car, without thinking I was on my way to the car park as I would have not thought twice about putting a window through. When I got there, there were a few folk giving a guy a hard time, but the dog was OK which was my only concern.

I think they should sack those involved & then lock them in a car for 30 minutes with the sun beating down on it. It really does pi55 me off, especially when you think these are working dogs & are supposed to be part of a team & their welfare & abilty to perform their duties should be paramount. Yet someone left them to dehydrate, then they would have started fitting, then eventually die.

Absolutely disgusting, there is no punishment worthy of this crime. Poor dogs, only thing I can't understand is it's usually reasonably busy outside a police station so why hasn't anybody noticed them in there and said something at the desk?

Only think fitting would be to lock the copper in a car until he suffers the same fate.
