how does it work & how much do you pay? just wondering as something similar is gonna happen in ireland soon ....more tax for nothing

  • #2
basically in the UK you either pay water rates (and this can vary depending on the water company or PLC that you live in) or you can have a Water meter fitted (you would pay a different tarriff on this, and again it varies from water company to water plc.) At the moment Water meters are Not mandatory, however legislation and enviromental water Stressed areas will see compulsory water metering introduced in the near future in the UK.

In ROI (particularly around Dublin) you have 'water councils' and water metering, whilst not compulsory, will surely follow the UK lead.

If you want any more details on this drop me a PM (currently working on metering usage for Dublin / Cork for domestic use)

Ref more tax for nothing, there is evidence to show that metering reduces consumption by @15%, therefore as it is also pay by unit (as per gas, electricity etc) it is a fairer way of billing - i.e. you pay for what you use, not what you are perceived to use.

Most domestic properties, when metered, actually save money !

    hope this helps,

In the North it's the same as the South and we already pay for out water through our rates, (same as your council tax).
They are now proposing individual water charges, which is fair enough, but without reducing the amount of rates that we pay???
If a fair proportion of our rates was a water levvy you can see why people would be easily annoyed.

Also virtually every political party at the last election stood on the doorstep and said they would oppose water charges.
Their 'promise' lasted about 2 months, before they said it was unavoidable and are now looking to implement .

interesting how things may / may not develop

I have just returned from R.O.I. after quite a few meetings there on this subject, and given the recent issues in Dublin (Winter Water shortages, believe it or not) its possible that there will be an decision soon on how the R.O.I.'s 34 WSA (Water service authorities) tackle water shortages and potential 'Billing' of water.

wonder if the forthcoming election (in R.O.I.) will have an impact on the decision ?

It largely depends on your consumption.

                    Scenario 1 - Low consumption
Single person, living on their own it's better to have your water metered.
My Mum recently had a meter installed, she had to wait 6 months for it, but it's now halved her water rates.

                    Senario 2 - High consumption
Large family, regular showers, washing m/c 24/7 blah blah.
When we moved house a few years ago, the water company installed a meter the same day. My water rates doubled.
