  • Important Driving Licence info :

You may or may not be aware that your photo card driving licence, and those of persons you may stop or produce their licence at a Police Station may have expired.

The photo card part of your licence is only valid for 10 years and DVLA have stated that the first photo cards were issued in 2008 and 300,000 are due to expire over the next 12 months.

Motorists who fail to renew their licences are allowed to continue driving, however you commit an offence of "failing to surrender licence" which carries a fine of £1000. The cost of renewing your licence currently stands at £17.50.

The critical date is the one shown next to 4b. On the back of the card, on the left hand side, in tiny writing, it says "4b. licence valid to". To cause even more confusion, the table on the back of the card shows how long the driver is registered to hold a licence, normally their 70th birthday. This is NOT the expiry date of the licence.

25 million photo card licences have been issued by DVLA so please when checking drivers licences check for the expiry date.

On a positive note the association of british insurers and the department of transport, have confirmed that insurance cover is not affected if drivers failed to update their phot card.

you can see the valid to date in section 4b on the front of the card, 01-10-08 on this sample, they are sending reminders out apparently

Paper one is valid until the expire date which is I think your 70th Birthday, DVLA will not issue paper one's now so if you move home or need to send it off I think you have to have the new photo type as a replacement....mini ID card.

Yes, that was a mis-print....you passed the test and spotted it. Well done. 1998 is the critical date.

So that's nearly half a billion towards the 175 billion black hole created by tw8ts Brown and Darling then

Paper licenses expire when your seventy years old I think. I am sure someone knows for sure.
