  • Ebay account Hijack

I've just spent the last 7 days getting my ebay account restored back to normal.

The first I knew of anything being wrong was when I got a message from another ebay user saying inform ebay your account is being used for fraud.
So I went into 'my ebay' to see what they were on about.
Sure enough in items I'm selling I had a JCB mini digger for sale.

So I informed ebay & they blocked my account, I couldn't bid, sell or even contact another ebay member.
Which I thought was very good as the scammers would not be able to use it either.
It still let me into 'my ebay' so I could then change my password. A link is sent to the email address you have registerd with ebay after you've answered a couple of questions. The ones you set up for security when you first register.

I'm usually pretty carefull when following ebay links & normally would have my suspicions raised by dodgy emails asking for me to log in etc...
So I went back & looked at my recent ebay activity, to see where anything unusual may have occured.
As I had not bought anything recently on ebay It became quite clear where the problem was.

I had won an auction 'a photo from the 1968 Tulip rally' I got the usual "You Have Won Item" email from ebay. Shortly followed by another email from Auctiva. They offer a photo hosting service for ebay users.
In their email there were links to other similar items. There were a couple that caught my eye so without giving it a second thought I clicked the links.
On clicking the first link it bought up an ebay log in page. I signed in & it took me to the auction.
On clicking the second link it asked me to sign in again which I thought a little odd but never really took any notice as I knew it was ebay.

After my ebay account was hijacked, I went back & looked at this email, when I looked at the properties of the links, it actually takes you to an auctiva link that looks like an ebay login page which then forwards you to the Item.
This obviously allows whoever at auctiva to collect your sign in information & do what they like with your ebay account.

I don't think for one minute It is anything to do with the ebay user I bought the Item off. I won another auction since getting full control of my account, the seller also uses auctiva to host pictures. Guess what I received an Auctiva email linking me to items again.
I've reported it to ebay but haven't heard anything back yet.

So my tip would be, if you get any emails linking to ebay auctions open the ebay home page & enter the item number into the search bar.

On the plus side I had my ebay bill a couple of days ago & I'm £8.50 in credit as they gave me the listing fees back for the mini digger listing they cancelled

Had an email of ebay thanking me for doing some of the spade work & told me my account was no longer under excavation, but they would carry on digging....
But not to get my hopes up as the mini digger left no tracks when they removed it from my account.

I just found it amusing that I actually made something out of ebay themselves
