  • Why o why did i start this

As title, why did I start to fit my WCXM????
Started it last Thursday afternoon, engine was supported managed to undo all the bolts but would the std cross member come off.....NO and as I was running out of time I had to put it all back together but would it go back together again NO, managed to temp put back together and pushed it back into the garage

Well started on it again this morning, again all bolts came off ok, this time managed to get the std cross member off and making great time.
Then it went down hill, 1st had to grind a bit of the O/S engine mount as it was hit the exhaust, then bolted mounts onto engine block and went to put the WCXM on, O/S bolts lined up but not the N/S holes then I remembered others said you have to cut the WCXM holes into slots, did this and had a quick look and all seemed to line up

Put the WCXM on a trolly jack and jacked into place, O/S bolts in ok but now the engine mount and the bolt hole wouldn't line up, undid the mount from the block and bolted it the the WCXM then managed to bolt it to the engine and the holes still lined up with the chassis holes so did partly did then up to keep it in place

Now for the N/S, nothing lined up, engine mount to block was off, chassis holes no where near and to make matters worst one of the threads in the nut thats welded in the chassis stripped all its thread so I have had to drill the chassis and now have to buy a long bolt to go though the chassis
Again running out of time so had get the car back in the garage so managed to temp get it back together but had to drag the car into the garage under its own power as it wouldn't budge when I pushed it, fecking loud when you have no exhaust on the car and hard work with no steering.

Will do little bits each day now as otherwise I'll end up hitting it with a hammer

If I still can't get it to fit I'll dump the 2 1/4" 3 piece exhaust and get a 2" one

Did do that but the rubber mount was still to close to the exhaust and went all brittle and the engine started to move so thought I would fit my WCXM

I fitted a new wcxm this year from the squires, fitted no probs with a little gring down to give extra clearance for the exhaust, engine mounts fitted perfect.
        Running a 2 1/4 manifold also

        No really and help though

Where did you get you wcxm from?

Sounds like it a poor fit

Been there as well over the years and now use either West Wales or the Squires for stuff as it will fit

I had this problem on my Mex track car, a little grinding helped clear the 2 1/4 manifold, but mounts still didn't fit.

turned out I had x-flow mounts .... one to check !!

Rather than get a longer bolt and putting it through the leg which will crush the chassis leg when you torque it up just get the next oversized drill bit and tap with matching bolt. Thats what I did and it torqued up just fine. I think the standard bolts are 5/8ths UNF so just ask for the smallest increase.

Make sure you buy a quality bench grade drill bit from an engineering shop not the crap you get in B&Q.

                  Update...
Checked the engine mounts and have pinto ones but have two Near Side mounts, quick call to Peter Lloyd and they are sending me a pair of Pinto WCXM mounts.

I must point out this has nothing to do with Peter Lioyd as I bought the first set of mounts of fleabay

Have got new bolts and some 5mm thick angle-iron to beef up the chassis leg. Having 24 hrs off the RS today and will do a bit on Wednesday

Best way is to tube the chassis rails rather than doing anything else - that is assuming you don't want to replace the trap nut.

It ends up looking something like this:

yes I was going to tube just the one at the mo as all the others seem fine.

Lee, yes it will all be coming off before 12 months is up as the body needs some TLC after this summer

                              bit more of an update
The Peter Lloyd (PL) mounts arrived today, good turn around as only ordered them yesterday afternoon

Old WCXM off the car and fitted the PL mounts and they went on a dream, little bit of a grind to clear the exhaust and the WCXM is now fitted.

Only thing to do now is to put the TCA's and exhaust back on and tighten all the nuts and bolts up
