When I replaced my desktop computer earlier this year I was speaking to Topaz and as like ALL people with a PC I never run back-ups etc he advised me to "mirror" a pair of drives.
Basically this means the PC runs 2 hard drives but both are identical and are run as 1 drive only the other acts as a constantly updating backup
I went for 2 x 500GB drives
Today I suffered a hard drive failure
Normally this would mean total loss of data
But as I run a mirrored system all my data was safe and sound in the 2nd drive
A quick and simple reboot with only the 1 drive in and all is well again
Off to shop on Monday to buy a new 2nd drive
