anti virus

can anyone suggest a good free anti virus system etc to down load off the net.

i am sure thats what i had before but something went verry wrong pop ups all over the place and avg 9 reckoned i had 450 problems spyware malware etc

but with avg8 every thing seems spot on again bizarre .
