  • Who is the best you've been with?

Not sure I've put this in the right place, so if it gets moved I'll know it was in the wrong section.
Who is the best driver that you have personally sat in a car with and what did they do to make you realise that they were something a bit above the ordinary? It need not be somebody famous, just tell us all who you really rate as a superb driver and why.
For me it was Phil Collins, who back in the early eighties used to hire out group 4 Escorts to people like Dai Llewellyn. Cut a long story short, I did my work experience week from school for Collins Cars and the highlight of the week was Friday night when I was strapped into a group 4 Escort for the first time as Phil took it for a blast to make sure it was performing properly before going out on hire the next day. Phil's party piece was to deliberately spin the car while flat out in fifth so you ended up travelling backwards at very very high speed, all carried out under total control while carrying on a relaxed conversation through the intercom. An awesome driver who still regularly mixes it with WRC cars in his mk2

Francois Delecour in the Escort cosworth monte carlo winning car at donington in 1994.

he was guest that year (along with Steve bannister, Louise Aitken, Robbie head and Gwyndaff evans, and i was persuaded to get in with him for half a dozen laps.

out on track were various RS200's, GT40's, and RS500's and with one hand on the stick, the other on the steering wheel, he drove and passed virtually everything and hardly ever touched the brakes, absolutely amazing.

people who were ther said that from the outside it looked absolutely amazing, particularly coming down the pit straight in top gear and flicking it into redgate and down the craners...............

A close second best experience was at the same venue with former World hot rod champ Barry lee in 2000, driving, of all things, a KA. his car control was simply amazing.

        great times

have also been in with phill collins and experienced a similar "special" back in the eighties, easilly one of our most gifted 'club'drivers, with undoubtedly the greatest sense of humour of any rally driver.

won a competition to go to Boreham in 1992 - was going to sit along side Gwyndaf Evans in an Autoglass Sierra ................. he broke that !!!!! ....... so was taken out in a road trim escort cosworth - truly unreal - turned into corners that you thought you were driving past !!!!

like others here have said, the pros make it look so effortless
