  • Calling all Trailer Fairies ?????

I reckon its about time I was in your gang. So please can you give some advice so I buy the right sized trailer right from the off.

Most likely just go for a new one from Brian James as I dont really know anywhere else to look. Also remember when Rob Hoarder bought his many moons ago and was saying they work out not that much more and you get what you want.

Anyway, looking for something that is not enormous and so in the way all the time. Hopefully be able to fit through a 8 foot wide garage door if required.

So basically after the smallest lieght weight size I can get yet still be useful to carry about a range of cars.

Looking at moving things like... Escort (obviously), TR4, Small Hatchbacks, Anglia, that kind of thing. Nowt massive.

I want 4 wheels and also braking system, would be looking at a Electric winch (cos I am fat and lazy!).

So folks what do you advise I go for?

Deck length, width, weight, etc, etc...

Even better if someone is selling a nearly new one for peanuts!

    Cheers all

    Dave...

I was on their site last night actually. Need a winch for the "odd" occasion where an old car wont run. Not after owt really flash as it wont get used that much. The clubman does seem to be very popular though.

        What about this one then??

        Anyone used one of these??

        Cheers...

What is the weight of an Escort on average? Also how about the running width between the tyre centres?

            Cheers...

I bought a Clubman 1200 a few years ago, now they do a tilt version which I would go for if I was getting a new one
                    Cheers Rob.

I have a PRG and it is excellent, Mine is a narrow one [bed 1700x3650] and the Sunbeam and Golf both fit, I think an escort would as long as not arched and big wheels. It is also uprated to 2000kgs gross, so safe to put anything on it. Brian James and Woodford although OK tend to build the cheaper trailers down to aprice [B.J. A series is better] and B.J. in particular are prone to undersize tyres, I have seen a 2000kg one of theirs on 145/70x13 which would be marginal [http://www.ntta.co.uk/law/trailers/load_pressure.htm]

If I were buying again I would spend a few hundred more on a PRG or Fountain. Hazlewood does a nice job as well and now Ifor Williams are doing car trailers [on springs not rubber]

                            Useful info here http://www.ntta.co.uk/default.htm

A covered trailer gets a bit heavy and if you tow with a van, the trailer is deemed to be max weight even if empty if you get stopped, and most vans have a max trailer weight of 2000kg in the UK.

Buy new - it then has a known history, and the last thing you want is to spend almost as much on second hand and some knob has bent it so it doesn't tow stable.

Just an aside, our local trailer dealer sells Bateson and B.J. they have a B.J. on the hire fleet and gives a load of grief, thge Batesons are much better and much dearer, a hire fleet is a bit different to what we do though, and I know a lot of happy B.J. owners.
