seriousley looking for a good RS2000 and will pay good money for a good one, but can anyone give me some good tips on what to look for when viewing a car, i used to have a MK2 and know about the spare wheel well and front strut mounts etc but its been a long time and i wondered if you guys had any good tips on looking for rot, especially in hard to see areas like under the carpets on the floorpan and under the inner wings etc, any advice would really be appreciated, i really want to avoid fetching one home lifting the carpets and finding a load of rot.

the mk2 escorts rot every where just make sure you look every where if you need to pull back the carpets just do it
but make sure its a genuine shell aswell look for the strut top mounts and the cut out in the x member for the rad and the top cut out of the slam panel and the rear tramp bars and exaust bracket and spare wheel well strap mount this will be on the boot floor and not in the wheel well also make sure it has got the gcat vin mumber on the tag under the bonet
rust to look for
front legs top bulkhead wing rails scutle panel a post sills floors inner sills rear arches wheel well tank well and all the chassis you can also have rust down the c post the doors also go
so to the point they rust every where if that helps
price
if you are looking for a mk2 rs2000 price is every thing you will not get a very nice car for under about £4000.00 to £5000.00 if you see cars for less be very alert cos there is a reson why it is cheap
remember it will cost you about £5000.00 to restore a rs2000 to a very good standard
hope this helps
if you need more help tell us where you live and there might be some one of here that lives near you so they might help you when you find a car
good luck mate................cheeRS......paulsigpiccheeRS paul

Have a look in the resto section of this board , there are plenty photos showing the worst areas , this will give you an idea of what to expect . I would say that the old adage about any classic cars now applies to RS2000's and that is to buy the best you can afford , it takes a lot of time , money and effort to turn a bad one into a good one. Always look for good body and trim over mechanical condition , try to avoid cars with sunroofs (apologies to those with sunroofs) although if everything else is very good the roof can be re-skinned , don't be choosy between Custom model or base model both are as desirable , check condition of lights front/rear as these can be expensive to replace .
You will pay anything from £1000 for a car that is worth restoring up to 7-8K for a minter. The problem you face is for around £3k you risk the chance of buying a badly disguised resto project and I'm afraid no matter how hard you look these cars will always turn up a surprise fro you somewhere. The good thing is at the moment they are like money in the bank , if you buy right you should always get your money back and perhaps if things stay as they are a bit more on top.sigpic
