They fit better on mk2's as the arches have more room . They normally rub on mk1's unless you've got a 2 foot ride height !!!!!!!!

not sure of your need for a performance tyre for the road?does this mean you are about to drive beyond the legal speed? surely a 175/70/13 budget tyre is more of a practical choice.

The new Avon !! well almost new

If pushed hard in the dry, whether on 6in or 7in rims, CR28 Sport will tear up the edge like there's no tomorrow. On dry MN rallies the top Escort people used up 3 pairs on the back (carried in the car of course Mr Judge of Fact...ahem) when one set of TB15s had lasted an entire event.

For dry, Yoko 048R (032R long gone) are still generally used in ASWMC speed championship roadgoing classes. Some consider they are not as good as 032Rs were because the latter came in 3 compounds not 2 and thus the softest was that bit softer. These are lethal in standing water -and don't believe anything to the contrary.
Dont expect any "List1A" tyre (some mentioned above) to offer same grip.
You may find registering for ASWMC and buying Yoko from Bridge Tyres is cheapest.

The NEW Avon CR28 !!! from 1987 [ so not that new !] Developed and tested by Peter Vaughan gave a better wear rate than the old w pattern used on Motoring News events that KL refers to, using a bigger block pattern, that didnt over heat so quickly like the old pattern or shread so quickly. They ran a complete solid centre block all the way around the centre of the tyre which you would cut slices out every inch if it was going to be a really wet night.

On a dry night Steve Hill would use 6 to 8 tyres on his Mick Briant Escort
                        of the W pattern

The new Avons are the best and anyone who has an Escort should treat theirself to a set just to see the difference, I use to sell my part worn ones to a couple of mates who ran 1300cc , the first time the one lad had them on, he couldnt believe the difference, ' like being on a rail tracks ' he said ' no wonder you boys can go so fast ' he said this to me at the finish of an event over breakfast, I said I told you, he then rolled the car on the way home after falling asleep !!!

Buy em Graham , but dont use them in Wexford on a hot day in the road rally class! as I found out, about 5 to 7 miles into a stage depending on the stage corners, you will find that your Avons have turned to the grip on a marigold biscuit and here comes the bank and oh shit theres a ditch infront of it !

Jon, just wondering if you had Avons on the car when the picture in your avatar was taken? If so how do they grip when pointing skywards?
                          Only joking with you.
Glad that you pointed out that the Avon available today is a completely different tyre to the ones being discussed earlier inthe thread

Yes they are, you have to make sure you buy the soft compound version as they do a road compound in the same pattern.

West Wales Rally Spares sell them, very popular on hill climbs
