Escort vs focus

Does anyone know why a 1999 escort tdi is quoted as doing 42 mpg while a 1999 focus tdi is quoted as doing 58 mpg,i have checked this in a few places,old auto expresses parkers guides etc and dont know why there is such a difference is it just arodynamics which i doubt or is it a completely different engine which i would assume to be more likely as it does seem a substantial difference.Does anyone have any experience of this,thanks.

I would say 42 + would be about right, I have a 115bhp mondeo and it does 45 mpg if driven easy, neighbours Focus does about 48

I could get it to high 50's even 60 if on a run continous motorway miles
