  • Old Fools on Tour - Northern Ireland 2008 - Portrush

First may I say thank you to the Irish boys for a warm welcome. Thanks to Gerard, Seamus, Sean, Acheyford James, Doc, Richard Wilson and Stevie Nevins for both the great hospitality and great company. You live in a lovely part of the world and we were amazed by the amount of donuts left at every junction.

I set my clock for 5:15am as my flight was at 7am. The boys driving their cars over had an even earlier start than me!! But I got there first and made my way to Larne to watch their cruise ship sail in. Spence thought he was abroard and had set his timezone on his watch. He was also amazed that I wasnt jetlagged.

While I was waiting for the boys to arrive, I had a quick mooch around Larne and spotted some awesome graffiti.

A quick stop for a drink and a chill out while getting some rays in the lovely sunshine as I waited by the beautiful harbour to watch them sail in.

We took a quick tour up the coast road with me following in my mini ferrari hire car (fiat punto 1.2) lagging behind.

    Ruddy spotted Gaz W...

We stopped for lunch at Giants Causeway. It was fiver each to park so we knocked it on the head and went to the pub instead. I had already been before to see the stones and Spence was content to look at the pictures on the wall in the pub and google it when he got home.

We cruised on up to Portrush for a look round then headed inland, first stopping at Acheyford's farm for a look through his garage.

Achey and Sean told us of a local Rally, so we headed over for a little watch. No British health and safety here, you could mingle with the cars and get really close for some good pics. It was free too which was a bonus. The Irish motorsport fraternity sure know how to enjoy themselves on a weekend.

Next its over to SKN. This place was simply mind blowing. Retro Ford was there for a Photo Shoot and we were blown away by the hardware on display. It was a proper toy factory. I want one!!!

Heading out to our accommodation we spotted Gerards place and stopped for a cold Stella (The Irish dont know what a Kettle is according to Ruddy) His place and collection is well documented but I spotted some things which may amuse you. Custom has a contender for the louvre competition, the things is, Gerards is NOS - so Custom will have to settle
    for second.

Also I was pleased to see a pic of my own car on his wall. The guy has taste.

Finally arriving at our comfortable and supurb cottages its a quick shower and change as we only have half an hour to get to the resturant. When we mentioned the town we were staying in, everybody laughed or giggled, that really tickled us up!

Gerard informs us we are on flexitime so we show up fashionably late. A wonderful & new American steakhouse and both the food and service was really great. Around 15 of us sat for dinner. I didnt take any pictures as I was saving my battery life for the show, lets just say that Bobby Love was on form with the multiple hen nights. My second favourite was Ruddy's favourite and I ended up talking to my third favourite while having a fag break with Spence Even though I dont smoke!! 1 in, 2 out.

Everyone except Bobby Love wanted their bed. Bobby Love was the only one up for Sasha and Diggers at Kelly's but we were outnumbered and we had the sick boys in tow so we went back to the cottage and watched the Lakes Tour DVD.

Spence and Bobby Love had a nightcap and we all retired. It had been a long day.

The next morning Ruddy brought us breakfast in bed, well just coffee. Its the thought that counts.

Oggie and Ruddy hoovered their cars and applied some Autoglym Wax and off we went. We were hoping to stop at Asda for breakfast, but Irish sunday opening hours are different over there and it was closed - we waited until we got to the show and the Cafe was quite good.

I will let the show pictures do the talking from now on. I will post another pictures thread very soon with EVERY ESCORT at the show!!! I went over to see some cars that I have never seen before, It did not dissapoint!!! so here are a couple of my favourite 'new' cars....

    cheers boys

Aye, just to recap on Neils comments, great bunch of lads to travel with, Bobby Love you could take anywhere as he is so quiet you wouldn't know he was there, all the lads over the pond are true gents and couldn't have made us feel anymore at home , I will get them all a kettle for Xmas

Spence came over to mine Friday evening and after a good natter we hit the bed about 11.30 (seperate beds) , we were back up and away about 03.20 to make our way to Carlisle to meet Eric and Ernie in the Mex for 04.30. Timing couldn't have been better, as we came down the slip road of the M6 the old lads went cruising past, a quick stop 5 mins up the road to rub the sleep out of our eyes and it was away to catch the 08.00 ferry at Cairnryan.

Fag break number 1 , many more would follow !!

Is that a fishing rod in Bobbys hand ?

We made good time and Spence had time to check he'd packed his anti-malaria tablets and check his Irish phrase book before ringing Gerard to ask if he should put his watch forwards or backward to Irish Summer time

As you can see the crossing was rough and we struggled to keep down the cheap (!!) breakfasts as we came into Larne

My favourite of the weekend , I will be refitting my steels and clear glass shortly

Oggie decided to dip Gerards diesel, while Bobby Love muttered something about dipping Gerard .....

Apparently there was a show on as well, if only it would cloud over or rain

So after a 21 hour day on Saturday and approaching a 19 hour day on Sunday it started to catch up on the young handsome member of the trip

I think the thing that amazed Spence most about the weekend was the fact that the majority of cars over the pond have private plates ....
