it was a card to welcome them to their new house which we posted but without a postcode, in Feb this year, it turned up back at ours today inside a Post Office envelope just adressed to Tony & Emily No2 Blah Blah Blah . . .
Royal Mail send all items that can't be delivered to a centre that has been given the authority to open mail items to find if there is a return address inside.
If there is one the item will be sent to that address, if no address can be found these items are then destroyed. If any items of value are found the item is kept for a short while in case the sender makes a claim and can prove the item was sent by them. Unclaimed items are then usually sold via a government auction, not bad for a price of a stamp

Yes,, it had been opened by Royal Mail, BUT . . . . how did it get back to us, with no return address or any details inside the envelope
All letters are now laser scaned and a mark is placed on the letter, this will show what area it was posted, then if your lucky a postman will often know a persons name and where they live.
When I walked the streets many years ago I would deliver items with things like "to the old lady with the red door and cats", you will be amased and what people put as an address.
