  • Am I paying too much

Car is in a local motorsport garage having the axle rebuilt, they are changing both halfshaft bearings, rebuilding my LSD as one plate broke and damaged all the other plates.
It needs new clutch kit, bolts, gaskets and all the bearings replaced in the axle.
Total for labour is £200 plus parts and VAT.

    I don't know.

    Are you ?

    What's the hourly rate ?

    £25 ?

Most independant garages around here (Brentwood , Essex) charge £55+ vat an hour and upwards.

The local BMW main dealer is £110 + vat an hour.
    Cheers Rob.

                  2 x halfshaft bearings - Apprx £20 each
LSD rebuild (carried out by Tran-X) including ALL diff bearings £180
                  Gasket - £1
                  LSD oil - £15-£20

I personally would charge 3 hours labour @ £35 per hour to remove/fit halfshafts, diff (diff having been built up at Tran-X) and fit 2 halfshaft bearings

So if you getting the labour for rebuilding axle and the LSD diff for £200 then I would say u got a good price.

Is there any special tools required to perform all this work on rebuilding the axle?

There must be a hell of a lot of clean hands on this site.
If you can mechanic it's a mornings work and put the money in your pocket. If you can't £200 is fair.
Like everything in life its not just the bearings being changed that costs £200 its jacking the motor up, removing the wheel, hub, blah de blah.
If you took your garage two half shafts and two new bearings and asked them to change the bearings I would be surprised if they charged you fourty quid!
Same goes for the difference between jacking up, unbolting driveshafts ect and just throwing a complete, removed and cleaned diff unit on the bench.

Daves £180 for a LSD rebuild is good value. The brgs alone cost at least half of that then plates, crushable spacers and a man to do it. That seems the best value of all.
